The Genesis: July Workshop

This extraordinary collaboration between TCCH and POJ began with a free three-day musical workshop in Kingston from July 25 to 27, 2024. Led by TCCH's Rodari Simpson, Grammy-nominated soprano Laquita Mitchell, three-time Grammy winner Chauncey Packer, and guest conductor Dr. Tyrone Clinton, this workshop laid the foundation for the November concerts.

Participants, primarily members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica, were introduced to techniques for accompanying opera singers, an area of music they were not previously familiar with. Under Dr. Clinton's baton, musicians found his teaching style refreshingly different from what they were accustomed to. His approach made the complex task of performing alongside opera singers accessible and engaging. One of the workshop's key objectives was to help the POJ prepare for their performances in November, where they will share the stage with TCCH's renowned vocalists.

This workshop, with its focus on skill enhancement and collaboration, is a perfect example of TCCH's mission to spread classical music beyond traditional borders, offering local musicians the tools they need to thrive in new musical environments. Read more

Upcoming Masterclass: November 15

In keeping with their mission of music education, TCCH will host an exclusive masterclass on November 15 at the Edna Manley College of the Performing Arts, just one day before the main events. The masterclass will be led by Gregory Lamar, an internationally renowned voice teacher, and coach, alongside Rodari Simpson.

Students attending this session will gain valuable insights into key aspects of classical music performance, particularly stage presence and voice technique. But this masterclass is not just about honing musical skills; it's also about learning the often-overlooked business side of the industry. Many talented musicians work tirelessly to perfect their craft but lack the business acumen needed to build a sustainable career. Rodari Simpson will provide guidance on navigating the music business, ensuring that these budding artists are equipped with the tools to succeed not only on stage but also in managing their careers.

The event underscores TCCH's dedication to nurturing the next generation of performers, providing them with a well-rounded education that will serve them in various genres. Whether these students continue in opera or venture into other musical territories, they will leave with a deeper appreciation

of how classical music can elevate their artistry.

The cultural exchange

On October 25th, Franklin Halliburton, Music director and Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica, came to New York to teach TCCH members locally produces songs that will be performed at the event. The members found his style and the reimagined pieces in a distinctly Caribbean framework, that features congas a welcoming change. They are excited to be led under the baton of Mr. Halliburton.
